how we serve
The Law Enforcement Explorer Program was established in the 1960s as a way to attract young motivated individuals with an interest for a career in law enforcement. Through Sheriffs Explorers Association programs, young adults ages 14 to 21 can be associated with a sheriff’s office, train and learn about the profession to determine if it’s the right career track for them.
In March of 1979, 15 explorer posts met in Tampa to organize their own professional association. Today, the Florida Sheriffs Explorers Association continues to meet quarterly to train, network and meet their fellow explorers from other posts around the state.
Through the FSEA, Explorers receive training in the basics of law enforcement including, traffic control, report writing and radio procedures. Explorers are also given the opportunity to assist officers in controlled settings, such as parades or athletic events. Many posts teach their explorers about firearm safety and marksmanship. The explorer program is mutually beneficial experience, as many officers will learn from their explorers. If you or someone you know is interested in joining an explorer post, please contact your local Sheriff’s Office or the Florida Sheriffs Explorers Association to find the closest explorer post.
