Many of the American soldiers who went ashore in France on D-Day, a scene graphically and brutally depicted in the movie “Saving Private Ryan,” were trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Franklin County, Florida.
The Florida Sheriffs Association awarded twelve 2025 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing careers in criminal justice, supporting Florida’s youth and future law enforcement leaders.”
Today, the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) honored the fallen heroes who enforced the law and served the state of Florida in the line of duty. Eight names were added to the FSA Memorial Wall during the ceremony.

FSA President Sheriff Bobby McCallum of Levy County joined sheriffs, community leaders, and the families of these fallen heroes at the FSA Memorial Wall to celebrate the men and women who lost their lives while serving their communities.

FSA and the Sheriffs have been coordinating on the COVID-19 outbreak efforts from the beginning. We have hosted calls with the White House, the Governor, and Senator Rick Scott as well as many Florida state agencies and partners to improve law enforcement’s response to this outbreak.

The Florida Sheriffs Association, in an annual tradition, has awarded scholarships to hardworking students studying toward a career in law enforcement, corrections or another criminal justice field. These students look to follow in the footsteps of their parents as they are sons and daughters of employees working full-time for a Florida Sheriff’s office. To be considered for the scholarship, students submitted a five-page application and essay on how their parent(s) motivated them to choose law enforcement. The applications and essays were reviewed by a committee of representatives from the Florida Sheriffs Association whose members selected the 10 recipients.
