5 Ways to Support Law Enforcement

May 09, 2022

Every day, men and women serving at local sheriffs’ offices across the state of Florida sacrifice to protect the safety of their community. While they will be the first to tell you that they’re not doing it for the recognition, they do value your support.

Throughout the year, they are encouraged by hearing from local residents and knowing that their work is appreciated.

Whether you’re looking for ways your family, school or business can show support for law enforcement, there are many ways to get involved.

Here are five practical ways to help you get started.

Follow Your Local Sheriff’s Office on Social Media

Social media is an important communication tool for law enforcement. While often used to alert residents of public safety issues, social media also provides a way for their team to connect with the community. If you haven’t already, find, follow and engage with your local sheriff’s office on social media. It is a simple way to show your support and learn more about their work in your community.

Say “Thank You”

A second way to show your support for local law enforcement is to say, “Thank you.”

If you see a sheriff’s deputy or police officer in the course of your day, take a moment to share a word of encouragement. You never know what their day has been like and how much this may mean to them. You can also get your family, coworkers or students involved by writing or creating thank you cards for your local sheriff’s office.

Drop off a Gift

If you or your business are interested in showing your support in a more tangible way, contact your local sheriff’s office to find out the best time and place to drop off a gift for their team.

Call ahead so you can ask about the number of people, shifts or teams that are on duty and find an ideal time to drop off the items so they can be enjoyed by the entire team. Because most of the men and women who work at a local sheriff’s office are out in the community a lot of the time, consider sharing snacks or prepackaged kits that are easy to distribute.

Volunteer

Another practical way to show your support for law enforcement is to volunteer. Many sheriffs’ offices have programs, outreach events or fundraisers that require community support. Others may have neighborhood watch positions or community groups that facilitate conversations about important public safety and community issues. If you’re interested in getting involved, contact your local sheriff’s office to find out how you can get involved in your community.

Become a Hero

Opportunities are available for you to show your support for law enforcement by joining your local sheriff’s office team. Whether you’re interested in serving as a deputy, a corrections officer, or in an administrative role, you can have a positive impact on your community.
