A Life of Perseverance: Honoring 25 Years of Membership

April 29, 2026
FSA Members Mr. & Mrs. Hiep Chau

For 25 years, Hiep Chau has stood as a proud Honorary Member of the Florida Sheriffs Association—a milestone that reflects not only his long-standing support of Florida’s sheriffs, but also a lifetime defined by resilience, service, and unwavering faith.

Hiep’s journey to Florida is one marked by extraordinary courage. Born in Vietnam, he met his wife, Chung, while they were both university students in the late 1960s—Hiep studying medicine and Chung studying science. They married in 1971 and soon welcomed two children, building a young family in the midst of a country at war.

During the Vietnam War, Hiep served as a military doctor while Chung worked as a teacher, each playing a vital role in caring for others even as uncertainty surrounded them.

In 1975, the fall of South Vietnam dramatically altered the course of their lives. Hiep was arrested and sent to a re-education camp for more than two years.

“Life in the re-education camps was harsh beyond words,” said Hiep. “During those dark years, the image of my wife and two young children became my source of strength. I told myself again and again: I must survive. I must live long enough to see my family again.” While Hiep was imprisoned, Chung carried the responsibility of raising their children alone. Even after his release two years later, the family faced limited opportunities and an uncertain future.

Determined to create a better life for their children, Hiep and Chung made the courageous decision to flee Vietnam in 1979. Alongside more than 200 others, they endured a dangerous journey by sea. “We were packed together like sardines,” Hiep recalled. “Huge waves and fierce winds battered the tiny boat. In the middle of the vast ocean, we felt utterly helpless, entrusting our lives to God.”

Throughout the trip, the passengers faced hunger, sickness, and even pirates who robbed everyone on board. After being turned away by the Malaysian navy, they reached a refugee camp in Indonesia. “There was little food, poor sanitation, swarms of flies and mosquitoes, and widespread sickness,” said Hiep. Despite the harsh conditions, he continued to serve others, volunteering his medical skills to care for fellow refugees.

In 1980, the Chau family resettled in the United States with little more than hope and determination. Starting over was not easy. Hiep worked tirelessly to requalify as a physician in the U.S., while Chung took on various jobs to support their family. Through perseverance and sacrifice, they rebuilt their lives and ultimately made Florida their home.

Faith became a guiding force along the way. What began as curiosity grew into a deep and abiding Christian faith that shaped their family’s values and their commitment to community. Together, they became active in church life and helped establish a Vietnamese Christian church in Jacksonville, creating a place of belonging for others with similar journeys.

Today, Hiep’s story is not only one of survival, but of service—values that closely align with the mission of the Florida Sheriffs Association. As an Honorary Member for 25 years, his continued support reflects a deep appreciation for the men and women who work every day to protect and serve their communities. Like so many who support FSA, Hiep understands the importance of safety, stability, and opportunity—principles that helped shape his own American journey.

“Having served in the army, I learned an important truth,” said Hiep. “The military stands guard over the borders of a nation, while the police stand guard over the well-being and safety of the community within those borders. One protects the country from dangers outside; the other protects the people at home. Because of that, I have always believed that those who serve and protect our communities deserve our respect, our gratitude, and our support.”

Hiep recently received FSA’s Distinguished Member Award in recognition of his support as an Honorary Member over the past 25 years. In a letter to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, he wrote:

Hiep recently received FSA’s Distinguished Member Award in recognition of his support as an Honorary Member over the past 25 years. In a letter to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, he wrote:

“I am deeply honored to receive this certificate of support. I truly believe that those who serve and protect our communities are carrying out a noble calling. It has been a blessing for me to support the Florida Sheriff’s Association over these 25 years. I thank God for each of you—for your courage, your sacrifice, and your commitment to justice and peace. May you continue to be protected and strengthened in your service.”

Now a proud grandfather of five, Hiep reflects on a life rebuilt through faith, family, and perseverance. His story serves as a powerful reminder that behind every membership is a personal story, and that the strength of the Florida Sheriffs Association is rooted not only in its mission, but in the remarkable people who stand behind it.

Members like Hiep continue to inspire us every day as we continue our mission to support sheriffs’ offices around the state.
