Began law enforcement career in 1982 as a detention deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office; served as a patrol officer, Dunedin Police Department; returned to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office where he served in many law enforcement capacities from 1984-1998; private law practice; general counsel, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, 2006-2008; chief deputy and general counsel, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, 2008-2011; appointed Sheriff of Pinellas County, 2011; elected Sheriff of Pinellas County, 2012; re-elected 2016 and 2020.

Honors and Affiliations

Named 2019/2020 Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriff’s Association; Appointed to 2020 Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice; Awarded 2020 national leadership award by the Police Executive Research Forum; Bar Admissions: United States Supreme Court, all Florida Courts, U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Florida, U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals; memberships: Florida Bar Association; American Bar Association; Federal Bar Association; International Association of Chiefs of Police; Police Executive Research Forum, National Sheriff’s Association, Major County Sheriffs’ of America; Florida Sheriffs Association and chair of the FSA Legislative Committee; Executive Fellow for the Police Foundation; Boys & Girls Club of the Suncoast; Pinellas Homeless Leadership Board; Pinellas Sheriff’s Police Athletic League.
